Shutler Residence, Brentwood Park, Los Angeles

The simple appearance of the wall belies the complexity of its design.  In response to its site, which slopes and has a curved property line, each wall panel is six inches different in height to the adjacent one to preclude the need for the typical stair-stepped wall found on sloping lots, and they are at a slight angle to one another to follow the curve of the street.  The panel in the yard is a functional sculpture: the end of the black tube by the street is the mailbox, and the one by the driveway contains the gate controls, thus eliminating the two eyesores normally found in the front yards of walled estates.
