Codes required that the exterior remain intact, but by using sheets of glass to enclose the front porch, an invisible line was created between the exterior and the new, modern interior. The columns pass through the glass indoors to become sculptural, modern planes. Gutting the interior created a view from the front to the rear of the house, which achieved a spatial quality not usually found in a small house.
